Young Guns in Anglo-American Shoot Out at Volvo World Match Play Championship

10/31/2009

Two debutants from opposite sides of the Atlantic will contest the final of the Volvo World Match Play Championship as England’s Ross Fisher goes head-to-head with Anthony Kim of the USA at Finca Cortesín with a US$1.1million first prize to the winner.
After both morning matches were too close to call, all square at the lunchtime interval, they went their separate ways in the afternoon as American Anthony Kim cruised into today’s 36 hole final, whilst England’s Ross Fisher took an altogether longer route to the climax of the inaugural Volvo World Match Play Championship.
The 24-year-old Californian dispatched the doggedly determined Australian Robert Allenby by 5&4, an eagle two on the 27th hole thanks to holing out from 101 yards the knock-out blow, Kim saying, “I just turned it on on the second 18 and felt like some putts were falling and a couple of putts were going my way.”

Meanwhile, Fisher (28) went on a rollercoaster ride in the afternoon round; coming to the 36th green with a one hole lead over US Masters champion Angel Cabrera, the Wentworth-based Fisher was forced into extra holes, edging into a final against Kim after the Argentinean found bunker trouble when playing the 18th for the fourth time in an hour.
“I always knew it was going to be very difficult playing a great champion like Angel, [the] Masters champion [but] I want to go out there and try to give the Europeans that have supported me throughout this whole week,” said Fisher, adding, “I will try to give them something to cheer about.”
The 36 hole final of the Volvo World Match Play Championship tees-off at 8.15am and again at 1.40pm, whilst beaten semi-finalists Robert Allenby and Angel Cabrera contest the 3rd / 4th place play-off over 18 holes gets underway at 08.35am.
