Corey Pavin - Ryder Cup Captain 2010 @ the Volvo World Match Play Championship
Pavin the Way for Success
10/29/2009
US Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin, a special guest at the inaugural Volvo World Match Play Championship alongside his friend and rival Colin Montgomerie knows a thing or two about match play golf as a fierce Ryder Cup competitor and champion in this particular event at Wentworth back in 1993.
“I have great memories of winning back then,” says the US Ryder Cup captain, explaining, “I had not won in a while and I had to beat Nick Price, a certain Colin Montgomerie and Nick Faldo in the final, so it gave me a great deal of satisfaction and still does.”
On the migration of the match play from Wentworth to Finca Cortesín, Pavin says, “I think Volvo have done a great job for European golf in recent years and bringing this event to Finca Cortesín has been a masterstroke, as had the new format and I am honoured to have been invited over to what is a great event.”
Whilst Monty has had nine of his potential Ryder Cup team playing in this week’s Volvo World Match Play Championship, Pavin has just one, young gun Anthony Kim who had a flying start with a four-up victory over Retief Goosen.
“Sure, Colin has been the busier of us two this week,” said the US star, adding, “I have spent some time with the Volvo Ocean Race skippers, great guys and I have picked up some leadership and team building tips from them.”
