Ryder Cup captains meat Volvo Ocean Race skippers at the Volvo World Match Play Championship as golf and sailing joined forces on the course and out at sea.
European 2010 Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie was on familiar territory during the Volvo World match Play Championship whilst his team mates, Volvo Ocean Race skippers Ken Reed (Puma Ocean Racing), Magnus Olsson (Ericsson) and Ian Walker (Green Dragon) were all at sea.
On the Finca Cortesín course that will host the Volvo World Match Play Championship this week, Monty and his three crew men enjoyed their match, the Ryder Cup captain saying, “These guys are amazing, and as a keen sailor, I am fascinated by their experiences and would love at some stage the opportunity of sailing on one of the Volvo Open 70 yachts.”
The tables were turned in the afternoon as skippers Reed, Olsson and Walker talked Montgomerie and his Ryder Cup opposite number Corey Pavin, and over 50 VIPS through their remarkable Volvo Ocean Race experiences.
“Golf and sailing, there are many similarities in strategy, performance, determination and the will to win,” said Ken Reed of Puma Ocean Racing, his former rival Walker adding, “We had such a good time with Colin on the golf course this morning and he is definitely interested in doing something around the next Volvo Ocean Race, which starts in 2011.”
The Volvo World Match Play Championship takes place at Finca Cortesín from29th October – 1st October, whilst the next Volvo Ocean Race starts in Alicante in Spain in the autumn of 2011.
