Zamora Set to Reign in Spain

He is Spain’s most senior rules official and José Maria Zamora is, rightly the Tournament Director of the Volvo World Match Play Championship, the first on home soil for the man in charge this week.
As the clock ticked down to the start of the inaugural Volvo World Match Play Championship, Spain’s most experienced rules official, José Maria Zamora was to be found pacing and prowling the Finca Cortesín course, checking everything was in shape and selecting the pin positions for the entire championship. “We have different pin positions for each of the days, then for the weekend semi-finals and final, we have morning and afternoon pin positions,” he explains, adding, “The greens here at Finca Cortesín are fantastic, fast, and they will be even faster by the time the tournament starts with the wind and sun.” It is Zamora’s first-ever match play event in charge, but the Spaniard will take it all in his stride. “It’s a little bit different to directing a stroke play championship, easier in that you have only 16 players as opposed to 156, but we don’t play so much match play these days and the new playing format should be interesting. “With all the group matches lasting all 18 holes and each player assured of at least three matches, it is much better for TV and the galleries and it’s going to be a fantastic week,” he predicts. www.europeantour.com
