2000 Volvo China Open champion Simon Dyson may have been the last man to qualify for the Volvo World Match Play Championship but he was the first of the 16 world class players on the practice range at Finca Cortesín.
Two-weeks-ago, Simon Dyson was booked on a flight to Asia for the Singapore Open but all that changed when he won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews, a victory that elevated him into a debut at the Volvo World Match Play Championship.
“Winning the Dunhill was great for me, my second win of the season,” said Dyson on the practice range at Finca Cortesín, adding, “And the big bonus was it got me into the [Volvo World] Match Play [Championship] which is fantastic.”
Added the man who famously won three championships in ‘China’ in 2000, the Hong Kong Open, the Macau Open and the Volvo China Open, “I’m so impressed with everything here, the hotel has a ‘wow factor’ and the golf course looks great.”
31-year-old Dyson comes to the Volvo World Match Play Championship in eighth place on the Race to Dubai Rankings and says of his hopes for the week, “I’ve not played so much match play golf although I do enjoy it, so I’ll have to plan my strategy carefully.
“I’m in a tough group and start off against Henrik [Stenson] but my game is in good shape at the start of an important three weeks for me, and although I have not played the golf course before, neither have the other guys, so it should be an interesting – and fun week.”
